Vital Matters presents: Books for the future

More about our first session in April:

Butler’s Parable books begin in a fictional 2024, a brutal world that bears a remarkable resemblance to our own.  In this workshop series, we ask: How can Olamina’s story, and Earthseed help us to navigate the actual 2024, and beyond?

Books for the Future is more than a book club. Conversations and workshops will inspire and sustain our work as Shapers of change. If you have not yet read the Parable books, purchase them now from the Ivy Bookshop. Check out photos from our first session together below and join us for the next one summer 2024.

Join us. Shape Change.

Next Up:

Stay tuned for details on the next Books for the Future gathering. We will continue to explore themes from Octavia Butler's Parable Series, then carry those themes into a multi-part workshop based on Hospicing Modernity, by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira. Finally, we'll read and create adornments and puppets based on Eli Nixon's illustrated book, Bloodtide.

OCt 2: virtual Book Talk with Eli Nixon

Join Vital Matters and the Ecological Design Collective for a Virtual Book Talk:

BLOODTIDE: A New Holiday in Homage to Horseshoe Crabs.

Nixon’s new book is an illustrated proposal and manual for activation (and complication!) of a new holiday in homage to horseshoe carbs, with accompanying field notes to help navigate the quagmires and vistas of primordial futurizing through reparative returns, habitat restoration, cardboard transformation, time encapsulation, feasting, impossible dancing, parading and much more.

This book talk is part of Vital Matters' Books for the Future Series, and aligns with our Queer Climate Cabaret on Oct 17th! The book talk is free for all to attend. Whether or not you finish the book, read the first 45 pages and then skip around as desired. Bring a friend or meet one there! Depending on the will of the crowd, our bookclub could include low-stakes drawing prompts and/or singing crabaoke power ballads!

HOW TO BUY THE BOOK:

Signed copies are available through Vital Matters for a special discounted price of $20.00. Please email vitalmattersbaltimore@gmail.com to request your copy! Books can be delivered for no shipping fee, or picked up in Baltimore City.

You can also purchase books through Eli Nixon's website at: www.elinixon.com/theblootidebook
